How to Apply for Canadian Express Entry from Australia

Canadian Express Entry is an online immigration system for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. It manages applications for three federal programs: the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

The process begins with an eligibility check, followed by an online profile. Eligible candidates enter a pool and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System score. Canada then invites the highest-ranking candidates to submit a full permanent residence application.

Applicants living in Australia can apply from anywhere in the country, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. Australian citizenship is not a separate Express Entry category, so your education, skilled employment, language results, age and other factors determine your position.

The rules, fees, invitation scores and document requirements can change. Always check the latest information on the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website before paying for a test, assessment or application.

Choose the Federal Program That Fits Your Background

The Canadian Experience Class is designed for people with eligible skilled work experience in Canada. You generally need at least one year of authorised Canadian work experience in the three years before applying, together with the required language level. Canadian study or overseas employment alone does not satisfy this program.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is commonly used by applicants in Australia who have not worked in Canada. It generally requires at least one year of continuous, paid, skilled work experience in the same occupation during the previous ten years. Applicants must also meet minimum language requirements and achieve at least 67 points on the separate FSW selection grid.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is intended for qualified tradespeople. It usually requires two years of full-time-equivalent trade experience during the previous five years, plus either a qualifying Canadian job offer or a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian province or territory. Language requirements are lower than those for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, although the ranking system still rewards stronger results.

Your occupation must be matched to Canada's National Occupational Classification system, known as NOC 2021. An Australian job title may not correspond exactly to a Canadian title, so compare your actual duties with the NOC description rather than selecting a code based only on your position name.

Prepare Language, Education and Work Evidence

Most candidates need an approved English or French language test. Australians commonly consider IELTS General Training or PTE Core, while other approved options may also be available. IELTS Academic is generally not the correct test for Express Entry. Results must remain valid when you create your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.

Your score is converted into Canadian Language Benchmark levels. Strong results can significantly improve your ranking, particularly in reading, writing, listening and speaking. A candidate with competent English may qualify, but a higher result can increase the likelihood of receiving an invitation.

Foreign education normally requires an Educational Credential Assessment, or ECA, unless you are relying only on a Canadian qualification. The assessment confirms how an Australian qualification compares with Canadian education. Request it from an organisation approved by IRCC and ensure the report is valid for immigration purposes, not merely for employment or university admission.

Australian applicants should collect detailed employment references early. Letters should usually include the employer's contact details, job title, dates, salary, hours and a description of duties. Payslips, tax records, contracts and superannuation evidence can support the claim. Nurses, engineers, teachers and some tradespeople may also need provincial licensing after arrival, even if their Express Entry application is accepted.

Documents to Gather Before Creating a Profile

  • Valid passport and identity documents for you and accompanying family members
  • Approved language test results and Educational Credential Assessment report
  • Employer reference letters, contracts, payslips and other work history evidence
  • Marriage, divorce, birth or adoption documents where relevant
  • Police certificates and certified translations for documents not in English or French

Create a Profile and Receive a Ranking Score

After confirming that you meet the requirements of at least one program, create an Express Entry profile through your secure IRCC account. You will enter information about age, education, language results, employment history, marital status, family members, Canadian experience and any provincial nomination.

The profile does not itself apply for permanent residence. It places you in the Express Entry pool, where you receive a CRS score. The Comprehensive Ranking System considers core human capital, spouse factors, skill transferability and additional points.

A provincial or territorial nomination can add 600 CRS points and usually makes an invitation highly likely. A valid Canadian job offer can still matter for some eligibility purposes, but job-offer CRS points were removed from the ranking system in March 2025. Do not rely on older websites that still describe the previous points structure.

The pool is competitive and invitation rounds may target all programs or specific categories, such as French-language ability, healthcare, education, STEM, transport, agriculture or skilled trades. Category-based selection changes over time, and meeting a category's work experience requirement does not guarantee an invitation.

Submit the Permanent Residence Application After an Invitation

If IRCC invites you to apply, you normally have 60 days to submit the electronic application for permanent residence. At this stage, you must provide the evidence supporting every important statement in your profile. Information that cannot be verified may lead to refusal or a finding of misrepresentation.

You will pay the processing fee and the permanent residence fee, unless the latter is paid later under the available rules. You may also need to pay for biometrics, medical examinations, police checks, translations and document certification. Fees are set by IRCC and should be checked immediately before submission.

Applicants must complete an immigration medical examination with an approved panel physician. A normal Australian medical check or a consultation with your regular GP is not automatically accepted. Family members may need examinations even if they are not travelling to Canada, depending on the application circumstances.

Australian residents aged 18 or over may need an Australian Federal Police National Police Check for immigration purposes. A state or territory police check may not meet IRCC's specification. You also need certificates from other countries where you lived for the required period. Keep copies of applications and receipts because obtaining overseas certificates can take time.

Common Errors That Can Delay or Damage an Application

  • Using IELTS Academic when an approved immigration language test is required
  • Choosing an NOC code without matching the listed duties to your real employment
  • Leaving gaps in personal history, addresses or travel records
  • Uploading unclear scans or translations that lack the required certification
  • Claiming points for a spouse, qualification or job offer without supporting evidence

Plan for Funds, Family and Settlement

Many Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants must show settlement funds. The amount depends on family size and is updated by the Canadian government, so use the current table rather than an old calculator. Applicants under the Canadian Experience Class may be exempt, as may some people who are authorised to work in Canada and have a valid job offer.

Funds usually need to be readily available and legally controlled by the applicant or accompanying spouse. Borrowed money and the value of property are generally not accepted as settlement funds. Bank letters should show account numbers, opening dates, balances, current debts and average balances where required.

Include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children accurately. A family member who is not accompanying you may still need to be declared and examined. Failing to declare a family member can create serious problems for future sponsorship or permanent residence applications.

Settlement planning is especially important for Australians moving from a familiar English-speaking environment. Housing costs in Toronto and Vancouver can be high, while cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax may offer different employment and rental conditions. Research provincial health coverage waiting rules, school enrolment, transport and the licensing requirements for your occupation before accepting an invitation.

Track the Application and Prepare for Arrival

After submission, IRCC reviews completeness, eligibility, admissibility and background information. Processing times vary by program, application volume, security checks and the complexity of the family file. The online account is the main place to check messages and respond to requests.

IRCC may ask for additional documents, an updated police certificate, a repeat medical examination or clarification about employment. Respond by the deadline shown in the request. If your passport is requested, follow the instructions carefully and use a secure delivery service from Australia.

Once approved, you will receive confirmation of permanent residence instructions and, where applicable, a permanent resident visa. Australian passport holders generally do not need a visitor visa for a short flight to Canada, but that does not give them the right to work or settle permanently. Permanent residence approval is the document that supports the move.

Before departure, arrange accommodation, insurance for any healthcare gap, banking access and proof of funds. Carry key documents in your hand luggage, including your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, passport, family records and copies of professional qualifications. A clear record of your Australian employment and tax history can also help with renting and finding work.

Review your occupation against the Canadian NOC, book the correct language test, order your ECA and request the appropriate police certificates. Then create an accurate Express Entry profile through the official IRCC portal and monitor invitation rounds and rule changes while your profile remains in the pool.
