How Australians can get a UK skilled worker visa
Australians who want to take a professional job in Britain generally need a Skilled Worker visa before they begin employment. This route is for people with a confirmed offer from an approved UK employer, an eligible occupation and a salary that meets the relevant immigration rules.
The process is different from travelling to the United Kingdom for a holiday or short business visit. Australian passport holders can usually visit for up to six months without a standard visitor visa, but visitors cannot take a regular job, use public funds or begin permanent employment.
The visa application connects several requirements: sponsorship, occupation codes, salary, English ability, financial support and identity checks. A mistake in the job code or salary calculation can cause delays even when the employer is reputable.
Rules and fees can change, so applicants should check the current guidance from UK Visas and Immigration before paying. The following steps explain the usual route for Australians applying from cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide.
Find an eligible sponsored job
The first requirement is a genuine job offer from a UK organisation licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker migrants. The employer must appear on the official register of licensed sponsors, and the proposed role must have an eligible occupation code. Jobs in healthcare, engineering, information technology, teaching, construction, science and selected professional fields often appear in this system, although eligibility depends on the precise duties.
A job advertisement that says “visa sponsorship available” is useful, but it is not proof that the position qualifies. Ask the employer which occupation code they intend to use, whether the company holds a sponsor licence and whether the advertised salary is the gross annual amount for the sponsored role. Recruitment agencies may help find vacancies, but the actual sponsoring organisation is responsible for issuing the sponsorship certificate.
The work must normally be for the sponsoring employer and match the duties described in the application. Taking a second job or changing employers may require an update to the visa. A role based in London can have different practical costs from one in Manchester, Leeds or Glasgow, so compare the salary with rent, transport and council tax before accepting an offer.
Check salary and occupation requirements
For many new Skilled Worker applications, the general salary threshold is £38,700 per year, or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. The going rate is an occupation-specific figure based on a standard working week. Some jobs use different calculations for part-time work, overtime or irregular hours, so the contract needs careful review.
There are exceptions that may allow a lower salary. These can apply to jobs on the Immigration Salary List, recent graduates and other “new entrants”, certain healthcare or education roles, and applicants with relevant doctoral qualifications. A discount usually comes with a maximum percentage reduction and may not be available indefinitely. A candidate cannot simply choose the lower figure; the job and personal circumstances must fit an approved category.
The occupation code should reflect the work actually performed rather than a more convenient title. Employers sometimes use similar job titles for very different duties, particularly in software, management and healthcare. Review the code, salary, weekly hours and work location shown on the Certificate of Sponsorship before submitting an application.
Meet the English and personal requirements
Australian citizens generally benefit from the English-language exemption because Australia is recognised as a majority English-speaking country. A valid Australian passport normally provides the evidence needed for this exemption. Applicants who hold another nationality may need to prove English through an approved test, a qualifying degree or another accepted route.
The applicant must also have a valid passport and provide a Certificate of Sponsorship reference issued by the employer. The certificate is electronic rather than a paper document, and the application must normally be made within three months of its issue. Check that the personal details on the certificate match the passport, including names, dates of birth and nationality.
Most applicants need to show £1,270 in accessible funds for at least 28 consecutive days. The final day of that period must usually fall within 31 days of the application. The employer can certify maintenance on the sponsorship certificate, removing the need for separate financial evidence. Australians moving from a well-paid role in Melbourne or Perth should still keep bank statements available in case UKVI asks for supporting documents.
A criminal record certificate may be required for certain occupations, especially roles involving vulnerable people or sensitive services. Previous immigration breaches, overstaying and convictions should be disclosed accurately. Concealing relevant information can create a much larger problem than the original issue.
Prepare the application from Australia
The online application is completed through the UK government visa service. Applicants provide their passport details, travel history, employment information, sponsorship reference and financial information. They then pay the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, unless a specific exemption applies.
For applications made outside the UK, fees vary according to the visa length and can change during the year. The healthcare surcharge is generally charged for each year of permission and is separate from the application fee. Budget for both costs, along with flights, document certification, courier services and the first weeks of accommodation in Britain.
After submitting the form, the applicant attends an appointment at an approved visa application centre in Australia. Depending on the current service arrangement, the centre collects fingerprints, a photograph and supporting documents. Locations and appointment availability may differ between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and other Australian cities, so applicants living regionally may need to travel.
Keep digital copies of the application, payment receipts, sponsorship certificate and uploaded evidence. Australian applicants often coordinate visa timing around an existing lease, a notice period and international flights. Do not book a non-refundable flight for the start date until the visa decision and travel permission are confirmed.
Understand dependants and visa conditions
A Skilled Worker visa can allow an eligible partner and children to apply as dependants. Each person makes a separate application and usually pays a separate visa fee and healthcare surcharge. Dependants need evidence of their relationship, such as a marriage certificate, civil partnership record or birth certificate, where relevant.
Restrictions apply to some care workers and senior care workers. Since changes introduced in 2024, many people sponsored in care-related roles cannot bring new dependants unless an exception applies, such as holding qualifying permission before the relevant rule change. Families should check the occupation code and transitional provisions before making relocation plans.
The visa normally permits employment in the sponsored role, limited additional work under the permitted conditions, study and travel in and out of the UK. Public funds are generally unavailable. The visa holder must report certain changes, such as a new employer, a different occupation or a significant change in circumstances.
After five years of qualifying residence, some Skilled Worker migrants may become eligible to apply for settlement, provided they meet the salary, residence, character and other requirements in force at that time. Time spent on different eligible UK immigration routes may sometimes count, but visitor stays do not.
Plan the move and protect your status
UK employers may pay the Immigration Skills Charge when sponsoring a worker. This is normally a business cost, not a fee that the employee should casually agree to reimburse. Be cautious if a recruiter asks for large payments for a sponsorship certificate, promises approval without checking the role or refuses to identify the licensed sponsor.
Research the local employment market as well as the visa rules. Salaries in London may be higher, yet rent and commuting can absorb a substantial share of income. Regional cities may offer lower housing costs and strong opportunities in technology, healthcare, manufacturing and education. A person used to tapping an Opal card in Sydney or using Myki in Melbourne should also allow time to understand UK rail zones, buses and contactless payment arrangements.
Australians comparing overseas employers may find useful context in Philippines SME statistics, particularly when evaluating multinational companies, regional offices and business expansion plans. This kind of background research can help distinguish a genuine growing employer from a poorly described vacancy, although it does not replace checking the UK sponsor register.
Most applications made outside the UK receive a decision within about three weeks after identity checks and required documents are supplied, though additional checks can extend the period. Once approved, the applicant receives digital immigration status or instructions connected with the visa record. Check the permission dates, employer details and conditions immediately after approval.
The practical route is straightforward: secure a qualifying job, confirm the sponsor and occupation code, meet the salary and English rules, prepare evidence, submit the application from Australia and wait for approval before working in Britain. Start with the official sponsor register and current UKVI guidance, then coordinate your resignation, housing arrangements and travel only after the visa details are correct.
